With almost 72 million passengers per year Schiphol Airport is one on Europe's busiest hubs.
Our role was to design and help develop Notifly, an innovative app that offers residents up to 24-hour forecasts of aircraft movements.
By providing accurate, real-time information and visually engaging experiences, we aimed to transform potential disruptions into predictable and manageable events, ensuring the app remained a helpful tool rather than a platform for complaints.
The effectiveness of Notifly hinged on the precision of its data and the innovative ways we chose to represent aircraft noise visually.
Proactive Insights Around the Clock
Notifly delivers real-time and predictive insights on air traffic movements to those living near Schiphol Airport. By offering hourly forecasts up to 24 hours in advance, alongside live tracking of air traffic and runway usage, the app empowers residents with the information they need to plan their days. Notifications alert users to expected increases in air traffic, helping them anticipate and adjust to changes due to weather fluctuations or runway maintenance.
Our collaboration with Schiphol's data analytics team was crucial in developing a bespoke algorithm that underpins Notifly. This algorithm, leveraging radar data and detailed weather information, enables the app to forecast air traffic with remarkable accuracy. Machine learning ensures that with each prediction, Notifly becomes even more precise, continually enhancing the user experience.
A Visual Ode to the Skies
Incorporating Schiphol's affinity for vibrant skies, we infused the app with colorful sky imagery that reflects the time of day. This design choice not only aligns with Schiphol's brand identity but also adds a playful and visually stimulating aspect to the app. Whether users are checking the app in the morning glow or the evening twilight, the interface offers a delightful and engaging experience, making the act of tracking air traffic a visually appealing part of their daily routine.
